Oba, the Last Samurai
Abacus and Sword
© 2011 OBA, THE LAST SAMURAI Film Partners

A story of courage and dignity which inspired awe across enemy lines.

Oba, the Last Samurai is set during the bitter Battle of Saipan (1944-45), one of the most bloody and tragic battles waged in the Pacific during WWII. Based on a story documented by US marine Don Jones, the film chronicles the strength and bravery of Captain Sakae Oba, whose incredible tactical ability led US forces to dub him “The Fox.” A rare example of the war-film genre, Oba tells the story from both Japanese and US perspectives, shedding light on the samurai creed of death before dishonour which motivated Japanese troops and mystified the US military. Features Japanese heartthrob Yutaka Takenouchi (The Hovering Blade, A Honeymoon in Hell) as the stoic Captain Oba, and Sean McGowan (ER, Bones) as a US captain who comes to respect “The Fox.”
