Life, love and loss in a small island town.

Schoolboy Mamoru returns with his mother Michiyo, a beautiful young divorcee, to her island hometown. When orphan and town rascal Shin-san rescues Mamoru from a gang of bullies, his act of kindness brings Shin-san, Mamoru and his Michiyo together, forging bonds which subtly evolve over time – until tragedy changes them forever. Against the darkening backdrop of tensions at the island’s coalmines, Shin-san offers a movingly delicate portrayal of the shift from youth to adulthood, and life in a small town.
