| Fifteen years on, two earthquake survivors revisit their hometown. |
| |
Fifteen years have passed since the Great Hanshin Earthquake razed the town of Kobe on January 17, 1995. On the eve of the anniversary, twenty-something strangers Yuji and Mika (played by real-life survivors of the quake) are both drawn back to their former hometown for the first time in many years and are united by chance. Blurring the line between documentary and fiction, the camera follows them as they meander through the Kobe cityscape and their memories of the event which are enmeshed within it. Intimate handheld camerawork and an exquisitely subtle soundtrack (by genre-crossing experimental musician Yoshihide Otomo) combine to produce a humble, lyrical, and achingly real narrative of survival, replete with both sorrow and hope. Directed by Tsuyoshi Inoue and starring Mirai Moriyama (Fish Story) and Eriko Sato (Goemon). |
